Enhanced Endometriosis Clinic

Launched March 2021

At The Coombe we have a new enhanced clinic for the treatment of endometriosis. This is led by consultants with expertise in the management of endometriosis and supported by representatives from Physiotherapy, Dietetics and Pain Medicine. This clinic runs once a month and is for women with objective evidence of endometriosis. If you suspect that you have endometriosis please speak to your GP about a referral to our Gynaecology service. If endometriosis is then confirmed your treatment will be managed by our multidisciplinary team.

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is where tissue, similar to the tissue that normally grows inside the uterus, grows outside of the uterus. It affects approximately 10% of women in Ireland and usually presents with painful periods, painful intercourse or difficulty getting pregnant. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential to improving symptoms and preserving fertility.

How can I access this service?

For women who already attend a gynaecology service and have a diagnosis of endometriosis, their current consultant can refer them to our service, using the usual referral pathway.

For women who have symptoms of, or suspected endometriosis and want these investigated, they should contact their GP and be referred in the usual way to our Gynaecology Service; by HEALTHLINK or letter.

Our Multidisciplinary Team

Physiotherapy

Women’s health physiotherapists can help you to manage the symptoms of pelvic pain that are often associated with endometriosis. Treatments may include stretching and strengthening exercises, relaxation techniques and hands on therapy. Following a pelvic floor assessment your physiotherapist will work with you to devise a treatment plan as part of your care at the Coombe.

Pain Management

Women with persistent pelvic pain secondary to endometriosis may be referred to the Lotus Clinic in the Coombe for management of their pain. At the first visit, patients will be assessed by taking a detailed history and an examination. Based on this assessment,  an individually tailored treatment package will be offered. Treatments may include help with lifestyle modifications, psychological therapies, acupuncture and some medications.
